Once you have setup a homegroup using Windows 7/8/10 on your network, the next step is to fine-tune it so that all the older computers can find each other. All Windows 7 and higher computers will easily be able to join the homegroup by just using the password, but if your network contains computers running older versions of Windows, you’ll have to put them into the same workgroup. Setting up a small office, should I use workgroup or homegroup? Which is more secure?

Workgroup Vs Homegroup Windows 10 Youtube

All new Windows 7 Computers ????

Secure from what perspective ????

Tried using homegroup can't make it work. Thinking of trying workgroup instead. 2 pcs both windows 7 w/same operating system. Would workgroup be considered peer to peer?

In a workgroup:

All computers are peers; no computer has control over another computer.

Each computer has a set of user accounts. To log on to any computer in the workgroup, you must have an account on that computer.

There are typically no more than twenty computers.

A workgroup is not protected by a password.

All computers must be on the same local network or subnet.

In a homegroup:

Computers on a home network must belong to a workgroup, but they can also belong to a homegroup. A homegroup makes it easy to share pictures, music, videos, documents, and printers with other people on a home network.

A homegroup is protected with a password, but you only need to type the password once, when adding your computer to the homegroup.

OK, so I tried the homegroup and I am unable to share the two pcs. Had it working for a couple of hours but know pc1 cannot see pc2 under start, explore, network. I carefully followed the instructions for setting up a homegroup a couple of times. This is a business that I am trying to set up and I don't want to use a workgroup if it will not be secure enough for their information. I have spent many hours researching homegroups and can find lots of info on how to create, not much on troubleshooting. When I use windows troubleshooter it tells me it is a problem with the network. I can ping the router and both pcs from both pcs. Please let me know how you feel about the security with a workgroup because I feel this is my only other option.

Thank You!!

Question: a workgroup is not password protected; but you need the password for the user account to access the files. Would this be considered password protected.

Set Up Home Network Windows 10

What that means is you do not need a password to be in a work group, but you do need a password to access other computers in the work group Any time either of the computers restarts the connection would have to be activated again with the passwrod. In th case of a Home group the password is only required when the home group is established then never again.

Then would you say a workgroup would be more secure than a homegroup? I am really really having a hard time with sharing these two windows 7 pc's. Any help I can get is greatly appreciated.

What is the problem? When I plug computers into my network they come on line right away with out any fuss. You just need to share the folders and turn on network discovery.

The two computers are HC1 and HC2, HC2 I can see HC1 under network. HC1 cannot see HC2. When I first shared both could see each other, don't know why that changed, made no changes to the computers.

I have the windows firewall turned off for the homegroup on both pc's and I am using AVG as security but I added the IP address to be allowed. I have been at this for awhile. This last time when I thought I had the issue fixed I completely uninstalled AVG, rebooted and then created the homegroup. I could see both pc's on each other under network. Reinstalled AVG, still could see both pc's on each of the two.

Then the solution is simple. Remove AVG and install the equally good and free Microsoft Security Essentials. AVg used to be good and well respected. I used it all the time. However lately it has become bloated and over intrusive. Except for a test PC I use to answer questions about it, and one I have with Avast on it for the same reason, I have moved to MSE exclusively.

They have a license for this software till the end of the year but I will pass this on to them. Thanks

Between

Really does not matter since MSE is free.

Also since they have a license they should get support from AVG on this.

Gave network permissions in the reg and it worked. Thanks for your help!
